The Tropical Legumes projects, and the ongoing AVISA project, have worked across six crops and fifteen countries in Africa and South Asia to produce different classes of improved seeds. These classes include early generation seeds (Breeder and Foundation seeds) as well as Certified seed and Quality Declared Seed (QDS) that contribute to formal seed systems. Explore the interactive data below showing the production of seeds by class.
Description of seed classes
Seed Class | Description |
Breeder seed | Produced by or under the direction of the plant breeder who selected the variety. |
Foundation seed | The descendent of breeder seed; produced under conditions that maintain genetic purity and identity. |
Certified seed | The descendent of breeder or foundation seed; produced under conditions that maintain genetic purity and identity and meet certain minimum standards for purity defined by law and certified by the designated seed certification agency. |
Quality Declared Seed (QDS) | Produced under conditions that meet a minimum standard of quality but do not entail a formal inspection by the official seed certification system. |
